Community Corner

Helping Hands: Melissa Chacon

At America Scores Los Angeles, high school student Melissa Chacon wishes to empower urban youth through soccer, writing and service.

Name: Melissa Chacon, Culver City resident.

Volunteer Affiliation: America Scores Los Angeles, which has hosted programs at Culver Middle School.

How long have you been a volunteer? I have been a volunteer for this and other organizations for a few years now.

What was it about America Scores Los Angeles that made you want to volunteer? The coaches involved in the program taught me so many leadership skills--how to be a good kid, how to help out the community and to give back.

What is the most personally rewarding part of being a volunteer? It just makes me happy, knowing that I'm helping other people.

What do you believe is an important trend amongst high school students?  This is probably true in all schools, but kids aren't doing as much as they should. They aren't appreciating that teachers are there to help you. There are so many opportunities.
