Man Pleads Not Guilty in Palms Explosive Devices Case

A man who allegedly had an explosive device in his car and 16 pipe bombs in his Palms-area apartment pleaded not guilty today to seven felony counts.

Robert Colt Wilson, 29, was ordered held on $2.5 million bail while awaiting a May 31 bail review hearing at the Airport Branch Courthouse in Los Angeles.

Wilson was arrested Tuesday during a traffic stop in the 4100 block of Glencoe Avenue, just east of Marina del Rey, in which an explosive device was found in his vehicle, according to Los Angeles police.

A bomb squad was sent at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to Wilson's apartment in the 3800 block of Overland Avenue, near Venice Boulevard. The apartment building and three other buildings were evacuated and traffic was routed away from the area through the afternoon as the pipe bombs were removed from the apartment and detonated.

"This appears to be just a lone wolf type of individual," LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado said Wednesday. "There's no connection with terrorism. This is an individual who apparently seemed to be intrigued with explosive devices."

Wilson faces one count each of possession of a destructive device on a public street or highway, possession of a destructive device at a private habitation, possession of ingredients to make a destructive device, possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with a firearm, having a concealed firearm in a vehicle and carrying a loaded, unregistered handgun.
