Elementary school reported $23,700 missing from its coffers in November 2011.
A preliminary hearing for Cheryl Noda, who has been charged with stealing funds from the El Rincon Elementary School PTA, was continued today at the request of her attorney. Noda was charged April 12 with two counts of grand theft by embezzlement, one count of second-degree commercial burglary and two counts of forgery, said Jane Robison, a spokesperson for Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley’s office. Noda pleaded not guilty in April. The former treasurer of El Rincon Elementary School's PTA is accused of stealing $23,700, Robison said. New group aims to serve as a voice for parents of all Culver City school students.
A group of parents is joining together to form a united front in Culver City schools. The new United Parents of Culver City will hold its kickoff meeting Thursday, May 24. The organization is a “labor of love” designed to represent all of the schools in Culver City, said Jeannine Wisnosky Stehlin, one of the organizers. “We all decided that there was a need to have a parents' union when we tried to join forces regarding the adjuncts and parent-funded programs and positions issue,” she said. “It was an organic conclusion that there had to be a way for parents from all schools to exchange information and talk about issues that are important to us.” Steve Levin, who serves as interim president of the United Parents of Culver City, said he was…
Grand opening celebration is planned for this weekend.
West Los Angeles College is celebrating this week with the grand opening of its new Student Services and General Classroom buildings. The grand opening, which is scheduled for this weekend, marks a milestone for the campus, said President Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh. “These are two significant, sizeable projects,” he said. “The college is finally transforming itself.” The General Classroom building houses new classrooms as well as a lecture hall and offices for faculty members. There is also a courtyard between the two buildings. The new additions to the campus will be of great benefit to the college’s approximately 11,000 students, Abu-Ghazaleh said. “It signifies a lot to the students who are deserving of appropriate facilities,” he said. The publication measures Culver City high schools against others in California and the U.S.
Culver City High School is one of the top 200 high schools in California, according to U.S. News & World Report. The online news publication released its annual list of the "Best High Schools" in the country Tuesday. According to the report, the rankings are developed in conjunction with the Washington-based American Institutes for Research and are determined using math and English proficiency, college readiness and the ratio of students to teachers. Nearly 22,000 schools were analyzed. The report ranks Culver City High School against schools throughout California as well as across the country. The Culver City High School Booster Club is sponsoring a drawing to select two winners for exclusive, reserved seats at the Culver City High School/Culver Park High School Commencement, which will take place on Fri. June 22 at Helms Field. There will be two winners and the prize package for each winner will include six additional graduation admissions and reserved seating for up to 12 guests in the Helms Field Press Box. Tickets are $10 each or $50 for six and can be purchased at the CCHS Guidance Office and Culver Park High School through May 23. Over 700 community members flocked to the school’s April 14 Artworks! event.
Farragut Elementary School held its 9th Annual Community Arts Day on April 14, highlighting the work of over 500 art projects from throughout Culver City Unified School District schools. Under the banner ‘Fear No Art!’ the day consisted of free workshops and performances including improv, dance and fine art classes as well as candle making workshops, flower arranging, creating art from recycled materials, photography and cartooning. At the outside ampitheater, El Marino’s students provided a powerful taiko drum performance, La Ballona Elementary students performed an intricate folk dance from El Salvador, and Le Studio - a group of kids ages 6-13 - amazed everyone with their circus act, Culver City Middle School students took part in an …

Thanks to a grant from the California Department of Health, the local non-profit organization Walk ‘n Rollers will host and promote the kickoff for El Marino’s Bike to School Week festival this coming Sunday, May 6.
