No determination yet from prosecutors if they will seek the death penalty. Santa Monica resident Erica Escobar and Culver City resident Lucien Bergez were murdered in May 2011.
A 31-year-old transient will stand trial in the Culver City double-murder of an elderly man and young Santa Monica woman in May of last year, a judge ordered Friday. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Nancy Newman found sufficient evidence to require Zachariah Lehnen to proceed to trial for the May 2, 2011, stabbing and beating deaths of Lucien Bergez, 89, and Erica Escobar, 27, who lived in Santa Monica. Police were called to Bergez's modest home in the 4000 block of Huron Avenue near Washington Boulevard about 10 a.m. May 3, 2011, after the bodies were reportedly discovered inside the home by a housekeeper who was caring for Bergez. A man scares off suspects who attempt to rob him at gunpoint.
Here's a recap of crimes that occurred between May 8 and May 14 as reported to the Culver City Police Department. Attempted Street Robbery: On May 8 at 9:55 p.m., officers responded to the 6200 block of Bristol Parkway regarding a robbery investigation. The officers met with the victim who told them he was walking toward his residence when he heard someone tell him to drop his wallet. He turned around, and the first suspect was pointing a handgun in his direction, and the second suspect stood next to him. The victim began yelling at the suspect(s), and they both fled the location. While President Barack Obama won't be heading to Culver City this time, local residents should stay away from Beverly Hills area tonight and tomorrow morning if they want to avoid 'Obamajam.' The President will stay in Beverly Hills overnight and leave Friday morning, but the majority of his trip will bein the Studio City area. Ahead of Obama's planned trip to Los Angeles Thursday night, L.A. Councilman Paul Krekorian warned Studio City residents and commuters who travel through that area to expect traffic delays. Video footage shows a man holding a handgun and what appears to be an explosive device to hold up the Smart & Final store that borders Culver City.
Police are seeking a robber who hled up the Smart & Final store on Venice Boulevard, after surveillance video was recently discovered showing the image of a man who used a handgun and an object resembling an explosive device to hold up the store. The robbery occurred at 8:40 p.m. on March 16 at the Smart & Final store in the 10100 block of Venice Blvd., near Hughes Avenue and the border with Culver City. The suspect used the handgun and facsimile explosive device to intimidate two store employees, forcing one of them to open a safe. He took an undisclosed amount of money and fled from the store. Authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts of area mountain bikes with an estimated total value of $250,000.
Authorities on Wednesday sought victims of a ring of thieves who stole nearly 200 expensive mountain bicycles with an estimated total value of $250,000. Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts: Julian Herrera, 23, and his brother Jamie Herrera, 21, both of Los Angeles; and Alberto Mejia, 34, of Colton. A news conference was planned this morning, when officials will display 20 recovered bicycles and 40 recovered wheels and ask victims to come forward and retrieve their property. Three men reportedly smashed jewelry cases with a hammer and fled the mall with the jewelry Thursday night.
Police are searching for three men who were seen smashing glass cases and stealing jewelry from Zales at Westside Pavilion on Thursday evening. The incident was reported at 8:32 p.m., about thirty minutes before the mall's closing time. The men reportedly used a hammer to break the cases and left it at the scene. Witnesses told police they left the mall in a car, with one of the suspects riding in the trunk. KCAL is reporting the men left in a sedan with jewelry valued at $130,000. On May 2., at approximately 8:50 p.m. two suspects allegedly stole an iPhone and a black leather wallet from an unidentified victim, outside Culver City High School at 4401 Elenda St., reports Culver City 311. According to Culver City 311, the suspects were both black males, around 6 feet tall, thin, and between 16-20 years of age. They allegedly held up the victim with a blue, steel semi-automatic handgun. The death of an LA County forensic technician on the same day of Breitbart's autopsy release date has bloggers speculating.
The death of conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart is still generating talk and speculation connected to the possible poisoning of an L.A. County forensic technician, who died on the same day the Breitbart autopsy results were released, the Huffington Post reports. Breitbart collapsed March 1 in Brentwood, a short distance away from his Westwood home. An autopsy concluded heart failure was the cause of death. Michael Cormier, a forensic technician with the L.A. County Coroner's Office, died last week and officials told the Los Angeles Times arsenic poisoning may have been the cause. "At this point we haven't ruled out foul play," LAPD Lt.
