The following piece was written by Sherman Oaks Patch editor Saul Daniels. This article first appeared on Sherman Oaks Patch. It was the early 1980s. It might have been the gym at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, or some other sort of dark all-purpose school room with a stage, curtain and lights. But it was shadowy and seemingly vast and the mood was electric with expectation as Dick Clark swept in. There he was, "America's Oldest Teenager," looking the part, with beautiful wife Kari on his arm. Hair in a Pompadour, teeth like Chiclets -- yes a cliché, but apropos. Douglas, 69, passed away Sunday following a long battle with throat and lung cancer.

Peter Douglas, executive director of the California Coastal Commission, passed away on Sunday, according to the commission's Chief Deputy, Susan Hansch. Douglas was appointed director of the Coastal Commission in 1985, and stepped down from the post in June of last year. He had battled throat and lung cancer in recent years. A public funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Culver City’s Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary for songwriting legend Robert B. Sherman. Sherman, 86, died at his home in London Monday from what an executive with The Walt Disney Co. described as an `”age-related illness.” Sherman, together with his 83-year-old surviving brother, Richard, was one half of the prolific songwriting team responsible for some of the world's most familiar music. In 1965, the Sherman brothers’ won two Academy Awards for Mary Poppins; Best Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee.” They received seven other Oscar nominations for the scores for Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Tom Sawyer and The Slipper and The Rose and the songs `Chitty …

The political blogger-journalist collapsed near his Westwood home and was taken to UCLA Medical Center early Thursday morning.
Andrew Breitbart, a prominent political blogger and journalist who founded several websites, died unexpectedly after collapsing near his Westwood home just after midnight Thursday. He was 43. Breitbart's father-in-law told the Associated Press that someone called 911 after they saw Breitbart collapse. He was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. An announcement on his website BigJournalism.com says Breitbart died of natural causes. A watch commander at the Los Angeles County coroner's office told the Associated Press the cause of death is unknown and an autopsy is likely. As the investigation into Whitney Houston's death continued inside the Beverly Hilton Saturday night, helicopters hovered overhead and camera crews, reporters and fans gathered outside the hotel. An impromptu memorial began to grow on a sidewalk, as fans contributed flowers and candles. Marquit and Autrese Strozier of Los Angeles came to the Hilton when they learned of Houston's death. "When we heard the news, we just wanted to come out and see if it was true, and also see them bring her body out—so we could see if it was real," Marquit Strozier said. Singer Whitney Houston died today at the age of 48, the Associated Press is reporting. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, confirmed the death of the singer Saturday, but did not reveal how or where the six-time Grammy winner had died. According to the Los Angeles Times and the website TMZ, Houston died at the Beverly Hilton hotel. TMZ published a photograph taken Saturday of a police crime lab vehicle outside the hotel. MVFC CEO Lucia Diaz said Factor, who passed away on Dec. 5 at the age of 94, used to dress up as Santa for the pre-schoolers at the center located in Culver City.
Monte Factor, the founder of the Mar Vista Family Center died on Dec. 5 at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, reports the Los Angeles Times. He was 94. Factor founded the Mar Vista Family Center in Culver City - an organization dedicated to providing low-income families with quality early childhood education, youth enrichment, and educational tools - with his wife, Betty, in 1977. A memorial service honoring the producer was held on the Sony lot Tuesday.
What would Laura Ziskin do? Close to 1,000 people made up of family, close friends, business associates and members of the media came to Sony Pictures Studios to pay their final respects to a giant in the world of film, and to attempt to answer that definitive question in their own personal way. The service was held in the famed Stage 15 on the Sony lot. Many parts of the Spider-Man series that Ziskin was famous for producing were filmed in Stage 15, as were portions of other well-known movies. Stage 15, which is approximately 42,296 total square feet and 40 feet high, was filled to absolute capacity. Family, friends, and the community at large came out on Thursday and Friday to pay their final respects to the woman whose presence was synonymous with love, warmth and generosity.
At Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City on Thursday, there was a viewing and rosary for the lady who many in this city of 40,000 plus considered to be a most incredible and wonderful human being. I am one of them. I came to know Ursula Vera by way of my many visits to Sorrento's market, similar to many others who visited the shop while hunting for good grub. But I was as nourished by her warm and gentle spirit as I was by the food that is known around town. At the viewing, Mrs. Vera looked beautiful—and perhaps more important—at peace. Most people would tremble at the long, brutal road of pain and suffering that she had to endure due to her failing kidneys.
