Juan Alcala's hit lifts Culver City to a 1-0 first-round victory over Eastside.
It's been a magical season so far for the Culver City High baseball team, so much so that Coach Rick Prieto and his players don't want it to end. The reward for winning in the postseason is the opportunity to keep playing, and the Centaurs earned one more game with a 1-0 victory over Eastside of Lancaster on Friday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Pinch-hitter Juan Alcala drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a base hit to right field. He had been waiting all game for his chance and when it came, he made the most of it. "I wanted the coach to put me in the game because I felt like I could get the job done, he gave me an opportunity and had faith in me," Alcala said. "I was …

Metro says the newly opened light rail line is safe for now, but a downtown junction will undergo inspections because of "non-standard" repairs made to correct to the problem.
State safety regulators have ordered stringent inspections of a downtown Los Angeles rail junction for the newly opened Expo Line because of a serious design flaw that poses an increased risk of train derailments, it was reported Monday. Officials of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority insist the intersection of the region's newest light rail service and the older Long Beach Blue Line at Washington Boulevard and Flower Street is safe for now because of small modifications to the tracks, according to the Los Angeles Times. But the junction has presented significant safety issues and requires a special inspection program because of "non-standard" repairs made in an effort correct the problem, Michelle Cooke, who …

People throughout Southern California gathered individually and in groups Sunday to take in the enthralling view of a late afternoon solar eclipse. The eclipse started at 5:24 p.m. and ended at 7:42 p.m., according to Griffith Observatory officials. A solar eclipse happens when the moon moves in front of the sun from a particular viewpoint on Earth, obstructing a portion of the sun's visibility for a time. At its peak at 6:38 p.m., Sunday's eclipse made 85-percent of the sun invisible to greater Los Angeles. It was the most complete solar eclipse this region will experience until 2071, when a 91-percent eclipse will be seen, according to a variety of sources. They also predict a 78-percent solar eclipse to happen here on Oct. 14, 2023, and…

The ultraviolet index level will be “10" today, reports the National Weather Service.
Sunday's ultraviolet index level in the Los Angeles area will be 10, according to the National Weather Service. The reading indicates what the UV exposure is expected to be at noon, when the sun's rays are at their strongest. A reading of 0-2 indicates a minimal exposure level, and very fair skinned people could become sunburned in 30 minutes if not properly protected. A reading of 3-4 is considered a low exposure level, reducing the danger range for those with fair complexions to 15-20 minutes if not protected. A moderate exposure level of 5-6 indicates that a person with a fair complexion could be safe from sun burn for 10-12 minutes, unless protected. A high exposure level reading of 7-9 means that a person could be …
There are safe ways, with a do-it-yourself, 'pinhole projector,' but don't risk serious damage to your eyes Sunday by looking directly at the sun.
A partial solar eclipse is expected to darken the sun between 5:16 and 7:40 p.m. Sunday, but astronomers are advising you look ver-r-r-r-y carefully. How carefully? Start by turning your back to the sun. Really. "It is very important that everyone tempted by the sight of 84 percent of the sun's area being covered by the Moon take heed of the warnings you will hear for much of the coming week," said Andrew Fraknoi, chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill College, and a frequent radio commentator on all things astronomical. People can watch by making do-it-yourself pinhole projectors. They view the eclipse by turning their back to the sun and letting the sun shine through the pinhole onto a piece of paper. From there, the progression …
A brief look into astronomical eclipses’ and their impact in ancient history
The west coast will be the best coast in America to view the solar eclipse this Sunday, and one of the few places on Earth where it can be seen. See tips for viewing the solar annular eclipse safely and where to watch in and around Los Angeles here. The astronomical phenomenon that we call an “eclipse” has been viewed by many throughout history and has played a critical role in both mankind’s spiritual evolution and its scientific understanding of the natural world. For the Navajo, the word for eclipse means “eating the sun.” Considered an auspicious event, many tribe members would not only avoid catching a glimpse of the ring of fire, but would fast and cease activities altogether. Ancient China: Hsi and Ho, 2137 B.C. The earliest …

Cheadle will be among those tomorrow lending his support to the cause. “Don Cheadle has been a very strong voice on this issue,” Golub said. “So his involvement has been really great.” In addition to Cheadle, actress Lisa Edelstein and actor Josh Radnor are also …
