Community Corner

Helping Hands: Sally Copeland

As the Co-Service Unit Manager of the Culver City Girl Scouts, Sally serves the community and, yes, helps kids sell Girl Scout Cookies, too.

Name: Sally Copeland

Volunteer Affiliation: Co-Service Unit Manager (formerly known as Co-Neighborhood Chair) of the Culver City Girl Scouts.

How long have you been a volunteer? Most of my adult life. For example, I took on bake sales at El Marino and ran them but certainly not single-handedly; there was a team of us who worked together for eight years.  I have also held positions within the PTA, such as the recording secretary and president.  At school, I have helped in the classroom along with being a room parent for several years. When my older daughter wanted to join Girl Scouts, I stepped up to be co-leader and then leader of her troop.

What needs does your chosen organization fill?  Generally, I see that the organizations I volunteer for support children and make their lives better. When my older daughter started school I jumped in with both feet.

What is the most personally rewarding part of being a volunteer? Knowing that I am contributing to something that improves the quality of our lives.

What is the city's most important issue?  What to do to survive and then thrive in these incredibly tough economic times.
