Helping Hands: Christine Johnson

This committee chairwoman at Farragut Elementary fuels creativity by raising funds for arts programs.

Name: Christine Johnson, Culver City resident

Volunteer affiliation: Arts committee chairwoman at Farragut Elementary, Culver City Middle School volunteer

How long have you been a volunteer? I have been volunteering since I turned 13. I began volunteering in a hospital, back in St. Paul, Minn., where I grew up in late 1970s. In high school, I volunteered as a student mentor and offered tutoring to recently arrived Southeast Asian immigrants. Throughout college, I volunteered at art museums and served on several arts related committees throughout the Denver area.

What needs does your chosen organization fill? I volunteer at my children's local public schools. As the arts committee chairperson at Farragut Elementary,  I coordinate arts fundraisers for the school. I received a PTA Honorary Service Award this past year from Farragut. Also, I am currently "getting my feet wet" at Culver City Middle School by volunteering as well.

What is the most rewarding part of being a volunteer? The most rewarding aspect of volunteering is to know that I hopefully made a positive difference or influence on another person's art experience.

What is the city's most important issue? To maintain our city's "welcome mat" to new and existing businesses, and to keep forging quality development in our downtown and western corridor area along Washington Boulevard.
