Culver Marina Softball Stars Headed to State Championships

The 10-11 year old All Star division had its strongest victory in 15 years Wednesday night against Westchester Del Rey.

The following information was provided by Coach Charles Brown of the Culver Marina Little League.

Culver Marina Softball All Stars 10-11 year old division beat a strong Westchester Del Rey team. A Powerhouse to say the least. WDRLL is and has been known for years as the powerhouse of the Los Angeles area. What happened has not happened is almost 15 years as a team from District 25 made it to state tournament.

It was a close, tight game, how a championship game should be. Culver Marina never gave up and won the game. Culver Marina won game one easily and then got run ruled in game two. Culver Marina found themselves on the short end of a pitchers duel in the bottom of the 6th.  They had made a few errors in the game and had given WDRLL a couple of unearned runs.  They had hit the ball themselves pretty well and had base runners in every inning but had just not been able to push them across the plate.  So they trailed in the bottom of the 6th by a score of 3 – 1.  But they never gave up.

Carolina Robles battled through a 9 pitch at bat for a walk and you could feel that something was about to happen. Renee Amador then doubled to right field to score Carolina and had to use her speed to stay alive when her attempt to stretch the hit to a triple was thwarted. Lailah Bell recorded an infield hit, which finally allowed Renee to go to third. Coi Brown then hit the ball hard and forced an error out of the shortstop enabling Renee to tie the game and leaving the winning run on second.

WDRLL’s Lexi Clancy had pitched an amazing game herself but appeared rattled after the game was tied.  She managed to get a strike out but in doing so threw a wild pitch that put the winning run 60 feet away.  She seemed to recover and threw two beautiful pitches to the next batter for a 0 – 2 count.  She then uncorked another WP and it was the second District 25 win in as many days. Coi Brown gave up 4 hits and only 1 earned run.  Anaiya (Ironhead) Mitchell went 2 for 3, scored once, and continued to stake a claim as the best centerfielder in D25.  Renee Amador went 1 for 3 and had 2 critical RBIs.
