Culver City Wins Consolation Bracket at Bonita

The football team goes 9-2 at a seven-on-seven passing league competition in La Verne.

In one of the biggest and most prestigious seven-on-seven competitions of the summer, the Culver City High football team captured the consolation championship at the two-day Bonita Air Assault Passing Tournament last weekend in La Verne.

Senior quarterback Lukas O'Connor finished with 44 touchdowns in 11 games and the Centaurs finished 9-2 overall. 

In Saturday afternoon's consolation final, Culver City beat Bonita for the second time in the tournament, 24-8, as O'Connor threw a pair of touchdown passes to Kevin Porche and one each to Alex Jackson and Sydney Dorsey.

In the semifinals, O'Connor threw for six touchdowns in a lopsided 42-16 victory over Corona in a rematch of their pool play meeting. Jackson had three touchdown receptions, Mario Paschel added one touchdown catch and Miles Washington had two interceptions on defense. 

In the quarterfinals, Culver City beat Anaheim Canyon 28-12. Senior cornerback Anthony Luckett, a Division 1 prospect, had an interception as did Robert Moore. O'Connor threw touchdown passes to Akili Skannal, Kavn Buggs, Michael Horchin and Dorsey.

In the first round of the consolation bracket playoffs the Centaurs blanked Jurupa Valley 26-0 as O'Connor threw two touchdown passes to junior newcomer Paschel and one each to Dorsey and Porche.

Culver City was placed in the consolation bracket after splitting Saturday's first two tournament play games. The Centaurs routed Webb 38-6 in their opener, as Jimmy Heywood caught three touchdown passes, Luckett intercepted one pass on defense and Horchin and Porche each had touchdown receptions.

In the second game, the Centaurs lost 18-10 to eventual champion Charter Oak of Covina. O'Connor was intercepted twice in Culver City's first three possessions and four times in all. Robert Moore and Washingon had interceptions for Culver City.

The 32-team tournament began with pool play on Friday and Culver City got off to an inauspicious start, losing 20-18 to Crescenta Valley. The Centaurs had a chance to win on the final play but O'Connor's pass fell incomplete. Despite throwing an interception, O'Connor threw touchdowns to Horchin and Jackson.

Yamen Sanders and Malik Deckard each had interceptions and O'Connor threw for four touchdowns in a 28-8 victory Corona—two to Paschel and one each to Dorsey and Porche, who took over at quarterback for the final three series.

In the third round of pool play, Culver City survived four interceptions by O'Connor to beat Whittier 34-26. O'Connor threw for five touchdowns—three to Jackson and one apiece to Horchin and Porche—and senior linebacker Khalil Pettway had an interception.

Next, the Centaurs met host Bonita and fell behind 10-0 on two interceptions by O’Connor and a touchdown by the Bearcats. O'Connor recovered to throw for five scores, including two to Jackson and one to Porche. Luckett returned from injury and made his first interception of the summer in Culver City's 32-12 victory.

Culver City wrapped up pool play with a 30-6 rout of South El Monte as O'Connor tossed touchdown passes to Ben Matsushita, Sydney Dorsey, Jackson and Horton. Deckard and Derrius Morrow each had interceptions as the Centaurs went 4-1 in the first phase of the competition.
