Culver City High School Wins 2013 National High School Sports Medicine Championship

The American Academic Competition Institute recently released the results of the 2nd Annual National High School Sports Medicine Championships that took place in May, 2013 and Culver City High School took away the title of Grand Champions.

This year 400 students from 28 high schools across seven states competed in the national championships after qualifying from a field of 2,000 students from 190 high schools at the regional level.

Each team consisted of between 8 and 15 students with the top 8 scores averaged to create the Team Average. Schools were separated into one of three divisions by the number of students enrolled at their school. The exam consisted of 253 questions in three sections administered over a  two hour time block at each school. Topics included first aid and CPR, emergency procedures, medical terminology, legal issues, physiology, and anatomy/evaluation techniques for the upper leg and knee.

The Culver City High School Sports Medicine students performed extremely well at the national level, earning the title of National Champion of the Cramer (Large Schools) Division. In addition to first place in the large school division, Culver City High School scored the highest overall amongst schools from all divisions naming Culver City High School the 2013 Grand Champions. Senior Alex Munoz took second place, with nine other Centaurs earning All-American honors for placing in the top 25. For his performance, Alex earned a $250 college scholarship. Next year Alex will be attending Cal State Monterey Bay and majoring in Sports Medicine.

The students are part of the Culver City High School Regional Occupational Program under the direction of Certified Athletic Trainer Marcos White.

“Many of my students have decided to continue their education and pursue a career in the health field,” said White. “As a teacher, it is nice to know that you are having a positive influence on students who may one day save the life of someone else.”

Culver City’s first place finish in the 2013 National High School Sports Medicine Championship followed a first place finish in the California State Competition held earlier this year at St. Francis High School.
