Culver City Baseball Wins Two

The Centaurs improve to 3-1 with victories over Hoover and Highland. The softball teams wins and lacrosse and volleyball notes.

After opening the season 1-1-1, the Culver City High baseball team posted back-to-back tournament victories Friday and Saturday. The Centaurs play next at Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, then host Westchester on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Ranked seventh in last week's initial CIF-SS Coaches' poll,  Culver City moved above .500 Friday with a 8-1 rout of Glendale Hoover in the Southern California Invitational. The Centaurs got a run in the first inning, five more in the fifth and two in the sixth, as Rodney Bradley hit a solo home run and scored two runs and George Aceves went two-for-three with one run scored one RBI and two stolen bases.

Tyler Mark pitched three and one third innings, allowing two hits and five walks with three strikeouts and Mario Fragoso allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts for Culver City (3-1).

The next day, the Centaurs trailed Highland of Palmdale 1-0 in the fifth inning but rallied for a 2-1 victory. Ryan Mulvihill had a hit and both RBI for Culver City and pitchers Jacob Metzinger, Brian Ibarra and Skylar Blocker allowed a combined eight hits and struck out six.

After winning their first two games by a combined score of 29-0, the Centaurs were dealt their first defeat last Friday against Marlborough, 4-3, but bounced back to beat host St. Monica, 4-2, to capture third place at the eighth annual St. Monica Tournament on Saturday at Beverly Hills High. 

Culver City scored on an inside-the-park home run on a line drive to center field that tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning. A walk and two St. Monica errors led to two more runs in the sixth, then Culver City padded its lead with another run in the seventh. Rosie Kamba pitched a three-hitter for the win. 

Culver City (3-1) hosts a doubleheader against Palisades on Tuesday, with the games scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. 

Lacrosse

The boys team improved to 3-0 after beating Beverly Hills 8-5 last Friday. The Centaurs host Mira Costa on Monday and Palos Verdes Peninsula on Wednesday before traveling to Palos Verdesfor a 4 p.m. game Friday. Casey Chabola's squad has racked up 36 goals in its three victories.  

The girls' lacrosse team, coached by Stephanie Cardenas, travels to Peninsula for a 4 p.m. game Wednesday, then takes on Palos Verdes on Friday. 

Boys Volleyball

Coach Joe Manzo's squad is 4-4 heading into Thursday's Ocean League opener against Santa Monica at 3:15 p.m. at Culver City. At the same time Friday, the Centaurs will host West Torrance in a nonleague match.
