Crucial Games Ahead for Centaurs

Ocean League play continues with games against Inglewood and Hawthorne.

It’s full speed ahead into the Ocean League for the winter sports programs and each one is looking to make its own mark.

For the boys’ soccer team it’s about redemption. After sub-par performances in their nonleague games, the Centaurs have gotten back on track. The boys have won two of their last three games overall and are currently 1-1 in Ocean League play. They will try to rebound from a 4-0 loss to Santa Monica last week and get back in the win column against Inglewood on Wednesday. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Culver City High.

The Sentinels (2-1-2, 2-0) beat Culver City twice last year in league play and the Centaurs will be seeking revenge. Inglewood comes in having lost to the same Morningside team that the Centaurs beat last week, 3-2. The boys will also play Hawthorne on Friday, another team that’s currently 1-1 in the league.

The girls’ soccer team will be seeking some redemption of its own. After a disappointing 2-2 tie against Santa Monica last week the girls will also take on Inglewood and Hawthorne this week. The girls’ games will also be held on Wednesday and Friday at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.

Both Culver City basketball teams will put their undefeated league records on the line this week. The boys and girls are both 2-0 in the Ocean League after victories over Santa Monica and Morningside last week.

The boys also got a win over Irvine University on Monday night, 77-65. As he’s done most of the season, junior forward Aamahd Walker led the Centaurs in scoring with 17 points in that game.

The boys will host Inglewood (13-5, 2-0) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Goodyear Gym in the Centaurs' toughest test so far this season. Head coach Jonathan Chapman called the defending champion Sentinels the favorite to win league again.

On Friday the boys will host Hawthorne (12-7, 1-1), another tough Ocean League opponent, also at 7:30 p.m. at Goodyear Gym.

The girls will also be playing host to Inglewood and Hawthorne. The Centaurs and Sentinels girls’ teams have almost identical records this season. Inglewood is 10-7 and Culver City is 10-8. The game tips off at 6 p.m., right before the boys’ game. The girls will then take on Hawthorne on Friday night.

As for aquatic action, the water polo team will have two games this week, beginning Tuesday against new Ocean League foe Marlborough. This is the Mustangs' first year in the league and Culver City Coach Nestor Dordoni said he’s unsure of what to expect. The Centaurs will need their ‘A’ game Tuesday and against Santa Monica on Thursday.
