Centaurs Softball Off to Fast Start

Culver City has won its first two games; baseball team opens 1-1-1.

If its first two games are any indication, the Culver City High softball team should enjoy a successful season. The Centaurs won their first two games and have yet to allow a run, outscoring their opposition 29-0 heading into Friday's home contest against Marlborough.

Culver City jumped on Viewpoint of Calabasas early in last Saturday's season opener at Beverly Hills High, scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 9-0 victory in which the Centaurs had nine hits and were aided by four Viewpoint errors.

On Tuesday, Culver City plated 20 runs in just four innings against Hawthorne Math & Science Academy at Alondra Park, causing the game to be stopped via the mercy rule.

The Centaurs' baseball squad, ranked seventh in this week's first CIF-SS Coaches' poll,  has had mixed results thus far.

Culver City lost to Lake Balboa Birmingham 7-4 and beat Sun Valley Poly 4-1 last week in its first two games of the So Cal Invitational, then tied Simi Valley Grace Brethren 5-5 in the third round on Wednesday--a game the Centaurs led 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Coach Rick Prieto's squad continues tournament play at Hoover in Glendale on Friday at 3 p.m. and play Highland of Palmdale on Saturday.

The boys' lacrosse beat Downey 10-6 on Wednesday to improve to 2-0 and will try to remain undefeated when it travels to Beverly Hills Friday night. In its two victories over Manual Arts and Downey, head coach Casey Chabola's squad has racked up 28 goals.

The girls' lacrosse team is off to an 0-3 start, losing all three of its games at the Rose Bowl Jamboree in Pasadena last weekend. The Centaurs lost to Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo 13-1, to Tustin 10-0 and to Lake Balboa Birmingham 7-1.

Stephanie Cardenas' squad travels to Beverly Hills High to take on the 1-3 Normans at 4 p.m., preceding the boys' game.

The boys' volleyball team, coached by Joe Manzo, was busy last week, dropping its season opener at Paramount in straight sets on March 1, then going 3-3 over the next two days at the Foothill Invitational, dropping its first two matches to Cypress and Los Alamitos, bouncing back to beat Valencia, Huntington Beach Marina and Norco, and losing its last match to Cerritos Valley Christian.

On Thursday, the Centaurs hosted Lancaster Eastside and handily swept the Lions, 25-11, 25-7, 25-12. Culver City returns to action next Thursday in a home match against Santa Monica. Andy Aguila has 63 kills, Alex Aguilera has 107 assists and Connor Finn has 17 blocks so far for the Centaurs.
