Centaurs Open Playoffs at Home

The boys and girls basketball teams start the postseason at Goodyear Gym.

The Culver City High boys and girls basketball teams are headed to the big dance. Each has earned a berth in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The brackets for all divisions were posted Sunday afternoon on the California Interscholastic Federation website and now the Centaurs know who they will face to open the postseason.

The boys finished the season tied for second place in the Ocean League. The league’s relative strength and the Centaurs' overall 19-7 record earned them a No. 11 seed in the Southern Section Division 3AA draw. The Centaurs will play unseeded Arlington High from Riverside.

Being the higher seed, Culver City gets to play Wednesday's first-round game at Goodyear Gym (tip-off at 7 p.m.). Should the Centaurs beat Arlington, they will either travel to No. 6 Torrance Bishop Montgomery or host unseeded Tustin in Friday's second round.

The girls team finished third in the Ocean League and was seeded ninth in the Division 2A bracket. The Centaurs' first-round opponent will be unseeded San Gabriel, the third-place team from the Almont League. Culver City (14-13) will host the game at Goodyear Gym on Thursday at 7 p.m.

If the Centaurs beat San Gabriel they will either host Yucaipa, the third-place team from the Citrus Belt League, or travel to No. 8 Cypress, the Empire League runner-up, in the second round Saturday.

The boys and girls soccer playoff matchups will be released Monday afternoon. Both Culver City squads are expected to earn postseason berths.
