Centaurs Girls Hoops Earn No. 6 Seed

Culver City hosts El Dorado in Division 2A; the boys get an at-large berth.

After finishing undefeated in the Ocean League, the Culver City High School girls basketball team was hoping it would be rewarded with a strong seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoffs.

The Centaurs (19-7 overall, 10-0 in league) got their wish, netting the sixth seed and a first-round home game against Placentia El Dorado on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Goodyear Gym. The Golden Hawks (11-15) were sixth out of seven teams in the Century League.

The winner of Saturday's game will play either Oak Hills of Hesperia or No. 11 Arlington of Riverside in the second round Feb. 22.

The Ocean League is well-represented in this year's playoffs. Second-place Santa Monica made the Division 1AA bracket and travels to No. 9 Buena in the first round Saturday. Third-place Inglewood got a wildcard into the 1AA draw and hosts Riverside King on Thursday for the right to play No. 2-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei in the first round.

Fourth-place Hawthorne is seeded 14th in Division 3AA and travels to Rancho Alamitos of Garden Grove in the first round Thursday. Fifth-place Beverly Hills travels to ninth-seeded Norwalk in the first round in Division 3AAA and winless Morningside failed to make the 4AA playoffs.

Meanwhile, Coach Jonathan Chapman's boys team earned an at-large entry into the Division 2A playoff draw after tying for fourth place in the Ocean League. The Centaurs (13-13, 4-6) take on 10th-seeded Savanna in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday in Anaheim.

Culver City and Savanna share no common opponents. The Rebels (22-3) were undefeated Orange League champions and ended the regular season with a 12-game winning streak, led by junior guard-forward Keith Davis, who scores an average of 11.5 points per game. Savanna's lone losses are to El Dorado in the Godinez Tournament, to Cypress in a nonleague contest and to La Canada Renaissance Academy in the Nogales Tournament.

The winner of Friday's game will play the winner between Western and seventh-seeded Colony in the second round Feb. 21. Looming in the quarterfinals is No. 2 Compton. The top-seeded team, on the opposite side of the bracket, is Mayfair from Pasadena.

Every Ocean League team made the playoffs. First-place Santa Monica is seeded sixth in Division 1AA and hosts Corona Roosevelt in Friday's opening round while runner-up Inglewood hosts No. 13 Saugus in the first round of the 2AA playoffs Friday.

Third-place Beverly Hills is the 14th seed in Division 3AAA but must travel to Arroyo in the first round Wednesday. Morningside, which tied the Centaurs for fourth in the Ocean League, is seeded 14th in Division 4AA and visits University Prep in the first round Wednesday while last-place Hawthorne made the 3AA draw and travels to second-seeded San Marcos in the first round.
