Centaurs Baseball Sweeps Beverly Hills

Culver City improves to 4-0 in the Ocean League with three impressive victories.

Every win is worth savoring. Beating your biggest rival, however, tastes a little bit sweeter. That must be how Culver City High baseball players felt earlier this week after twice defeating Ocean League foe Beverly Hills to take hold of first place.

The Centaurs (9-5-1 overall, 4-0 in league) split the title with Santa Monica last spring, but don't seem to want to share the crown this season. They began their week with a wild 11-9 win over the Normans—a game in which Culver City trailed before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Thursday's rematch was no contest, as the Centaurs scored twice in the first, twice in the third and tacked on three more runs in the fifth en route to a 8-0 rout over the host Normans at La Cienega Park.

On Friday, the Centaurs scored seven runs in the second inning and went on to blow out host Hawthorne 14-2 to solidify their spot atop the league standings. Culver City has now won six of its last seven games.

The Centaurs lost 17-13 at Hawthorne on Tuesday and dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ocean League. Culver City will host St. Monica in a nonleague game next Tuesday at 3 p.m. before resuming league play a week later at Santa Monica.

Daniella Gutierrez has a team-best .500 batting average and Lisa Kamba is slugging .727. Pitcher Rosie Hernandez has a 7-1 record with six complete games and 30 strikeouts in eight appearances.

Boys Volleyball

The Centaurs won both of their matches this week to improve to get back to .500 this season and climb to 2-3 in the Ocean League. On Wednesday, Alex Aguilera had 39 assists and Andy Aguila had 26 kills as Culver City rallied to beat Beverly Hills 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Culver City followed that exhausting win with a three-set triumph at Inglewood the next day.

Boys Tennis

The Centaurs were routed by host Beverly Hills 16-2 on Thursday. Culver City won two singles sets after the Normans subbed out their top players. Beverly Hills swept all nine doubles sets, losing only four games along the way.
