Centaurs Baseball No. 5 in CIF Rankings

Off to a 5-1 start, Culver City High is among the Top 10 teams in Division 3.

The CIF Southern Section released its first spring sports Top 10 polls Monday and the Culver City High School baseball team is ranked No. 5 in Division 3.

The Centaurs are coming off one of their most successful seasons ever in which they won 16 games, finished second in the Ocean League and advanced to the Southern Section semifinals for the first time since 1980. They have lost seven players to graduation, including catcher Garrett Gemgnani and All-League third baseman Ryan Mulvihill, but they return pitchers Tyler Mark, Mario Fragoso and Brian Ibarra, shortstop Darian Sylvester and catcher/first basemen Skyler Blocker and Jon Kocker.

Rick Prieto's varsity squad is off to a 5-1 start, with wins against Venice (10-3), L.A. Roosevelt (7-0), Woodland Hills Taft (6-5), Hueneme (8-0) and New Roads (5-3) and a 4-3 defeat to Ventura Buena in the Southern California Invitational championship game.
