CCHS Football Players Sign with Colleges

Centaurs standouts Jackson, Pettway, Sanders and Porche ink letters of intent.

Wednesday was national signing day and four football players made it official by writing their names on the dotted line and moving on to the collegiate level. Three of them, in fact, signed letters of intent with Pac-12 Conference universities.

In a ceremony on campus, wide receiver and outside linebacker inked that they are bound for Washington State (under new coach Mike Leach), defensive back is off to the University of Arizona and wide receiver is headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which joins the Big Sky Conference next fall.

A three-year letterman under , Jackson made 55 receptions for 1,083 yards and 13 touchdowns while serving as a team captain last fall. The All-League and All-Western Division first-teamer also returned eight kickoffs for 238 yards and had four 100-yard receiving games. He was ranked the country's No. 43 wide receiver prospect by ESPNU and was rated the 77th overall prospect in California by Rivals.com.

Jackson follows in the footsteps of Culver City alum , who set a school-record with 195 career receptions for the Cougars before being signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2008.

Pettway made 79 tackles (40 solo) with two sacks and one interception last fall and was a big reason the Centaurs reached the championship game of the . An All-Ocean League selection, he was ranked the No. 61 prospect in California by ESPNU. He also lettered in basketball and track and field.

Washington State also nabbed several other Southland recruits, including Venice High wide receiver Gabriel Marks (who had originally committed to SMU), fellow receivers Brett Bartolone of La Habra High and Robert Lewis of South East High, linebackers Eduardo Middleton of Oceanside High, Niu Sale of Los Alamitos High, Jeremiah Allison of Los Angels Dorsey High and Kache Palacio of Gardena Serra High, nose tackle Ioane Guata of Fullerton Junior College (and previously Venice High) and running back Theron West of Centennial High in Compton.

Sanders will be among a talented class looking to restore Arizona to the level it was in the early 1990s when the Wildcats were characterized by their "Desert Swarm" and "Cactus Curtain" defenses under Dick Tomey. First-year coach Rich Rodriguez must be delighted Sanders opted for Arizona instead of in-state rival Arizona State, for he is rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com is projected to be one of three safeties in defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel's 3-3-5 scheme. 

“The facilities are very nice, but that new facility is going to be amazing, like the best in the country,” Sanders told WildcatSportsReport.com following his visit to the Tucson campus. “I had a great visit for sure. Arizona was beautiful and the trip could not have gone better.”

Porche, who played an integral role as both receiver and the Wildcat quarterback for the Centaurs last season, threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 535 yards and seven touchdowns and caught 48 passes for 526 yards and six touchdowns.

Four players are also continuing their football careers at four-year schools: defensive end at Prairie View A&M, dual-threat quarterback at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, at New Mexico State and fellow defensive tackle at Syracuse, which is switching from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Jones (6-foot-5, 310-pounds), who committed to the Orange on Jan. 19, was credited with 45 tackles (24 solo) and four sacks for the Wildcats last season.
