Culver City High School Athletic Director Jerry Chabola shares his thoughts with Culver City Patch readers on Friday night's CIF final against Arroyo Grande.

On a crisp Friday morning at Culver City High School the Centaur football team embarked on a trip to Arroyo Grande to take on the Eagles for the

The students, teachers, staff and many community members gathered in front of CCHS to inspire and encourage the team. ASB worked all week to help make this a great event and the collaborative workers were successful.

Students and parents boarded seven buses to make the trip north. Our hosts from Arroyo Grande were some of the most hospitable the we have encountered.

On a perfect night for football over 700 people from Culver City filled the stadium. An estimated total of 5,000 people witnessed a setting that was right out of "Friday Nigh Lights."

The Centaurs held their ground and ended the first quarter in a 7-7 tie. The defense stepped up to stop the Eagles while the offense moved steadily down the field. Lead by Cal Poly SLO bound Kevin Porche and Lukas O'Conner and receiving corps of Julius Wilson, Michael Horchin, Jimmy Haywood and Alex Jackson, the Centaurs were playing with spirit and confidence.

The second quarter saw the Centaurs again fight back and even the score yet in the later stages, the Eagles scored to make the score 21-14 at half time. The second half saw Arroyo Grande break a couple of long plays making the final score 42-14.

Although the Centaurs were outscored, the day left many CCHS student-athletes and others with memories that will last a lifetime. This was truly an educational experience for the entire school and community. The four CCHS administrators include Principal Dylan Farris and three assistant principals: Ian Drummond, Kim Indelicato and Lisa Cooper were the bus chaperones.

This was a true milestone in CCHS history with Head Football Coach Jahmal Wright and his coaching staff putting in countless hours over the last 11 months to guide the Centaurs to this outstanding season.  Wright's wife, Monique, played a huge role in supporting the program.

In addition to all the fans who made the trip, Mayor Micheal O'Leary and outgoing School Board President Scott Zeidman were at the game and Superintendent Ms. Patti Jaffe was at the school to support the team.

The students of CCHS made us all proud as they rose to the occasion in a spirit becoming of such a great school.
