Busy Week Concludes for Centaur Sports

Culver City's girls soccer team and boys basketball team found success in their respective tournaments, while boys soccer hopes to bounce back from a tough week.

With tournaments rolling in and out, it can be tough to keep track of just which Centaurs team is playing and when.

The boys basketball team started another tournament this week, while the girls team had the week off. In soccer, the girls team played in two different tournaments and the boys team played in one.

Before the week began, the girls basketball team played their last tournament game. Despite being knocked out of championship contention, they ended their stint in the Inglewood City of Champions Tournament on a positive note.

The girls played Palos Verdes Peninsula on December 4 in a consolation game and won big, 59-48. It was the girls' third consecutive win after losing to South Torrance in the first game of the tourney. Junior guard Jade Neal led Culver City in scoring with 18 points on the night.

The girls have been dormant since, gearing up for their showdown with West Torrance next week. Their record is now 3-1 on the season.

In stark contrast to the basketball team's bye week, the girls soccer team has seen quite a bit of action. They played twice this past week, first Wednesday against Lawndale and again Friday against Malibu.

The Wednesday game was part of the South Bay Tournament, hosted by Culver City High School. The girls were victorious against the Lawndale Cardinals, 5-0. Senior captain Jennifer Mair scored two goals and an assist in that game, bringing her to a total of eight points on the season. They followed that up with a 1-0 win over Malibu on Friday, allowing them to move on in the Crossroads Tournament.

The boys soccer team continued their play in the Westside Tournament. The team also competed in two games this week, beginning the week Tuesday against Millikan and finishing Thursday against El Segundo. Both Millikan and El Segundo were playoff teams last year and both ended up getting the best of the Centaurs this week. Millikan won 10-0 and El Segundo squeaked by 3-2.

After coming out of the gates 2-0, the boys' record is now 2-2-1 on the season.

Both the girls and boys soccer teams had pretty grueling schedules, but the boys basketball team took the cake. Proving once again that there really is no rest for the weary, the boys had three games this week.

The team has been busy since their win in the Mira Costa Pacific Shores Tournament last week and started things off this week with games on back-to-back days against Renaissance Academy on Tuesday and San Pedro on Wednesday. They won both games easily, 57-48 and 65-53 respectively. Unfortunately, they couldn't sustain that momentum, losing Friday night to Fremont, 66-59, despite 24 points from forward Aamahd Walker.

Walker looks to already be in midseason form. For the season he's averaging almost 19 points a game, seven points more than he averaged last season when he was a first-team all-Ocean League selection.
