School Board Election Forerunner Nancy Goldberg: 'I Started My To-Do List'

While the results are not quite official, last night's forerunner for the school board election already has a couple of thoughts on her mind to improve Culver City Unified schools.

Culver City Patch editor Winter Johnson had a chance to have a quick chat with Nancy Goldberg after a very exciting night for this school board candidate. While the , Goldberg is the frontrunner with 34.49 percent of the vote and all precincts reported. Here are a couple of things on Goldberg's mind for Culver City schools:

Culver City Patch: I know it hasn't even been 24 hours since the results came in. How are you feeling?

: I've already started my to-do list. The first thing on my mind is the deferred maintenance that we’ve been fighting with for the last five to seven years. There are things that seem mundane but seem not to get done at the various school sites; for example, we need to get the water fountains maintenanced at all the sites so kids can get a drink or refill their water bottles. We have to make sure our kids stay hydrated.

We have to make sure that children are aware of basic hygiene and have resources like soap and towels in the bathrooms. Let's get back to basics in terms of our infrastructure. Let’s get our maintenance department on the ball and take care of our children.

I also want to improve our traffic control at various school sites, so that accidents doin’t happen like what happened to Scott Zeidman’s son. Editor's note: in front of Farragut in September 2008.

Patch: Did you expect to be the forerunner? Were you surprised?

Goldberg: I had no idea. I thought it was going to be between me and Chardiet, I really did. With both of us winning it is such a bonus. I was not anticipating anything like that. I hope that people appreciate what Mr. Zeidman did for our community. We can’t ignore that.

Laura and I can set a new pace. We only contribute a portion, none of us do it alone. Laura is an extremely capable, lovely woman, and we will exploit her in all of her abilities.

Patch readers: We will be posting more interviews and updates throughout the week, in addition to more reactions from candidates. Be sure to stay tuned!
