Is There Enough Security at Culver City Schools?

With Monday's incident of a boy bringing a gun to Culver City Middle School, should parents be pressing for greater security on campuses?

When a 6th grader to Culver City Middle School on Monday, police quickly arrested the suspect the following morning.

The Culver City Unified School District responded by issuing a statement about the dangers of bullying, .

In that statement, outgoing CCUSD Superintendent Patricia Jaffe stated, “…I would like to thank the Culver City Police Department and CCUSD security for working so quickly and effectively to arrest the student involved."

Culver City Police Lt. Ron Iizuka told Patch the .22 caliber gun found in the boy’s backpack when police went to the family’s home on Tuesday was an extremely small weapon.

“It’s so small [CCUSD security] would have had to have searched every single child as they came to school in order to have found it,” he said.

Iizuka said some schools do have portable metal detectors but that it would be up to CCUSD to decide if they wanted to start bringing those onto their campuses.
