Culver City Unified School District Board to Discuss Budget Issues

The CCUSD Board of Education will meet tonight at 7 p.m. to take a look at the budget in light of the sequestration. Also on the agenda is a discussion on the Common Core State Standards.

The budget – specifically the Second Interim Budget Report - will be at the top of the Culver City Unified School Board District’s Board agenda when it meets tonight at 7 p.m.

According to a CCUSD release, the district has several major goals as work begins on the development of the coming year's (2013-14) budget projections. The goals are:

  • Maintain a 5% reserve
  • Eliminate the operating deficit in order to balance the budget
  • Elevate the district salary schedules in order to attract and retain quality teachers, support staff and administrators.

According to the release, currently, “the district administrative team is conducting an in-depth review of each expenditure and revenue account in order to accurately project the current year's expected financial operating results. In addition, the coming year's budget will also be carefully constructed in a step-by-step manner, rather than by simply "rolling over" the current year budget.”

Governor Jerry Brown’s budget proposal would eliminate Revenue Limit (RL) funding and replace it with the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). However, the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) recommends continuing to project RL funding as follows: 0% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2012-13, 0% COLA for 2013-14, and 2.3% COLA for 2014-15.

According to CCUSD Director of Fiscal Services Sean Kearney, the CCUSD will budget based on categorical flexibility until it receives more direction from the state regarding the LCFF. IN addition, Kearney said the District reduced its federal program revenue in 2013-14 and 2014-15 by 5.9% per direction from LACOE relating to Federal sequestration.

Common Core State Standards

Also on tonight’s agenda, Eileen Carroll, assistant superintendent - education services, will present information regarding the new Common Core State Standards – the research-based standards for English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12.

The standards are designed to help students prepare for college and the workforce.

Carroll will discuss the work being done to prepare CCUSD staff and students and will highlight next steps and plans for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Board will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the District Board Room, 4034 Irving Pl. The public is welcome to attend.
