Culver City Teachers and Staff Ask 'Who's Next?'

Union members came in droves Tuesday night to protest the budget reductions that propose cutting 32 support staffers and 19.2 teachers from the Culver City Unified School District.

Packing the Council Chambers to the brim, students, teachers and school district staff came to Tuesday night's board meeting outfitted in red "Who's Next" T-shirts to express their opposition to a that totals $3.5 million in reductions for the 2011-12 school year. Among the cuts, the loss of the locksmith position, the restructuring of the security department and the layoff of as many as 19 teachers have received the most ire from the community in recent weeks.

The Board of Education decided not to vote on the budget cuts on Tuesday, choosing instead to hold a special meeting next week to further discuss the reductions.

"We’re all going to have to chip in on this, because we’re all family," board member Patricia Siever said in response to several parents and teachers who spoke during the public comment period. "There are no villains and there are no heroes. We’re all in this together."
