Assemblymember Holly Mitchell to Join Culver City Kids' Bike Safety Festival

Join the community and Assemblymember Holly Mitchell (D-Culver City) on Sun. May 6 for El Marino's free festival teaching kids (and parents) how to ride bikes safely and encourage them to bike to school more frequently.

Thanks to a grant from the California Department of Health, the local non-profit organization Walk ‘n Rollers will host and promote the kickoff for Bike to School Week festival this coming Sunday, May 6. The event will also promote National Bike to School Day.

Assemblymember Holly Mitchell (D-Culver City) will be on hand for the kick off event at El Marino Language School, at 11450 Port. Rd, which will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The free festival will teach children how to ride their bikes safely and responsibly and encourage them and their parents to bike to school more frequently. There will be several stations covering everything from how to fit and wear helmets; how to inspect bikes before each ride; proper starting and stopping techniques, and how to easily avoid hazards. After completing all the stations, the children will participate in a group ride around the neighborhood so they can practice what they’ve learned under the watchful eyes of trained instructors.

El Marino already hosts its weekly Walk ‘n Roll Wednesdays, encouraging children to walk, ride, skate and scoot to and from school. The brainchild of local resident Jim Shanman, Shanman said of the upcoming festival, “Getting kids active is one thing and the school’s Walk ‘n Roll Wednesdays help there, but teaching them how to do so safely and responsibly is the key to building confidence in both the kids and parents.”

Assemblymember Mitchell said in a release,  “At our annual Christmas-in-July event we give out bikes as prizes and provide free bike rides for all, because safe bicycling offers multiple health benefits – as recreation, exercise and transportation.”
