Video: A Sustainable Kick-Off for Sahli-Wells

It was standing room only at Gregg Fleishman's gallery for Meghan Sahli-Wells' kick-off campaign for the City Council on Sunday afternoon.

Several of ’ supporters took to the mike on Sunday afternoon to praise the community activist’s work over the years and endorse her second run for Culver City Council. (She narrowly missed out on a seat in the 2010 elections).

Among those who came to lend their support was Congresswoman Karen Bass, who was greeted with loud applause as she walked through the doors of the gallery on Main Street for Sahli-Wells' campaign kick-off event.

It was standing room only in the eclectic gallery/workshop as close to 80 guests lined up for a smorgasbord of goodies that included everything from dips and devilled eggs to chocolates and hot cider. There was also plenty of fair trade coffee and tea as everyone ate off real china plates and held cloth napkins.

However, this was no mere attempt to create a fancy display. As many of Sahli-Wells’ supporters commented, she ‘walks the talk’ and sustainability is one of three platforms she is running her campaign on (the other two are fiscal responsibility and smart development). She received huge applause when she stated to the assembled crowd that it’s time to ban plastic bags and Styrofoam.

The entire kick-off event was designed to ensure that there was a true sense of community in the room. Everyone received nametags and at one point attendees were asked to turn to their neighbors and introduce themselves.

Supporter John Flynn also had no qualms about asking everyone to donate money to the campaign as envelopes were passed around to allow attendees to write a check or drop cash in them.

The two-hour event concluded with everyone heading outside for a group photo for the campaign.

The Culver City Council elections will be held on April 10.
