Culver City Cultural Affairs Commission to Consider The Help Group's Public Art Concept

The commission will meet tonight at 7 p.m. and decide whether or not to approve artist Robert S. Toll's work 'The Doors' as part of the City's Art in Public Places requirement.

In the fall of 2012, The Help Group at 12095 and 12099 Washington Blvd. was issued two Culver City building permits to convert an existing 2-story office building into classrooms and to construct of a bridge between the parking structure and another building at the site.

Any commercial remodeling projects in the City that exceed 250,000 are subject to the City’s Art in Public Places program. The Help Group’s projects are valued at $3.82 million and the organization has chosen to fulfill the APPP requirement by commissioning original artwork by Robert S. Toll.

Tonight, the Cultural Affairs Commission will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall to decide whether or not to approve Toll’s work entitled ‘The Doors.’  If approved, it would be the second of Toll’s works to appear on The Help Group’s premises. His piece ‘Higher Ground,’ was installed in 2001.

According to Toll, ‘The Doors’ will relate to The Help Group’s mission on behalf of children with special needs.  The work is constructed from stainless steel and powder coated perforated aluminum, and the concept comprises 13 brightly colored doors affixed to a framework that is mounted to the second story façade of the 12095 Washington Boulevard building. Each of the doors will be permanently affixed in an open position and measure approximately 5’ high x 2’ wide, and is expected to be completed by mid-August.
