City Council 'Powerless' in Stopping Closure of Culver City Ice Rink

Dozens of supporters descend on Culver City City Hall Monday night.

Dozens of supporters descended on the Culver City City Hall on Monday night to protest the scheduled closing of the Culver City Ice Rink, and to ask the city council to help stop the closure.

But despite the turnout, council members said they were "powerless" in helping stop the rink from closing, according to KNBC.

"This is a community that has always changed, always adapted, and in this particular circumstance, as much as we would like to preserve the ice rink as a recreational amenity and a recreational asset to the community, there’s not a lot that we can do right now," Councilman Andrew Weissman said, according to NBC.

The rink is scheduled to close on Feb. 2 after 52 years in business and be replaced with a rock climbing and fitness center. See this previous story for more on the closure.
