Update 8:14 p.m. According to @Culvercity311, power has been restored to the mall and they are working on the surrounding area.
Original: An underground transformer explosion shut down power to the Westfield Culver City and surrounding neighborhood Friday night according to the Culver City Fire Department.
The explosion occurred at the intersection of Hannum Avenue and Slauson Avenue, according to Sgt. Estrada. He said the mall lost about 60 percent of its power and the streets nearby are dark.
SoCal Edison is on scene and Estrada added they expect power to be restored in the next 30 minutes.
According to @Culvercity311, traffic lights are out and traffic is backed up. Smoke was seen emanating from a structure near the intersection. At the mall, Culver City police were reportedly on scene and the fire department was also working on a couple of elevator entrapments, but there was no one in distress.
Patch will provide more updates as they become available.
