UPDATE: 'Smoking' School Bus Evacuated on 405 Freeway

Students and the driver were evacuated safely from the bus and there were no injuries. A cause has not been determined.

Updated 11:25 a.m.

Monica Posada of the California Highway Patrol said officers responded to the scene of a broken down bus Monday morning on the northbound 405 Freeway just south of the Getty Center Drive on-ramp with smoke coming from the engine compartment. They found the bus on the right shoulder of the freeway blocking the slow lane, with the students and bus driver standing on the right shoulder of the highway. The bus was towed off the freeway.

Posada said the cause of the bus smoke has not been determined and could not confirm the school district affiliated with the bus or how the students and bus driver were transported from the scene.

Original: The Los Angeles Fire Department evacuated approximately 16 people from a smoking school bus Monday morning on the I-405 northbound.

According to spokesman Brian Humphrey, the initial call of a vehicle fire in an occupied school bus came at 9:08 a.m. He said LAFD is on scene, and evacuated approximately 15 students and a driver from a smoking bus. There is no active flame.

The right lane is possibly blocked, Humphrey added.

The incident is highlighted on SigAlert.

Patch will update as more information becomes available.
