Police Encourage Residents to Sign Up for Nixle, Smart 911

The Culver City Police Department on Wednesday encouraged residents to sign up for two of its free emergency services including Nixle alerts and the city's Smart 911 system.

Both systems, police said, can assist Culver City residents in the event of an emergency or major situation affecting the city.

"The Culver City Police Department uses Nixle to notify users of missing persons, evacuate residents or businesses in times of an emergency, capture dangerous criminals, and more," the department said in a news release.

With Nixle, alerts are sent to subscribers via email or text message and are sent out in a similar fashion to Twitter.

Culver City also recently became the first city in California to implement a Smart 911 system that securely stores medical and other safety information about households to better inform first responders before they arrive on scene. The system is free and police said it is both secure and private.
