DUI Enforcement to Ramp up for Labor Day Weekend

Agencies across Los Angeles plan to crack down on drunk driving this weekend.

Local law enforcement agencies across Los Angeles will continue to ramp up enforcement targeting impaired drivers as the Labor Day weekend begins.

Among other agencies, the California Highway Patrol announced it will conduct its last maximum enforcement period of the summer from 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. on Labor Day.

All available officers will be on patrol, with an emphasis on removing impaired drivers from the highways, CHP said.

"Through our education and enforcement efforts over the holiday, we are hoping to save lives and reduce the number of people injured and killed on California roadways," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. "Do not let your guard down just because summer is coming to an end. Drive defensively and always wear your seat belt."

Enforcement efforts will also continue with checkpoints and extra patrols in West LA, Long Beach, El Monte, Norwalk, South Pasadena,San Dimas, Pomona and other cities through midnight Labor Day.

More than 900 people were arrested last week in the Southland through a similar crackdown.

The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown resulted in 975 area arrests for people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs between 12:01 a.m. Aug. 16 through midnight Aug. 23, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

That number is up significantly from the 888 DUI arrests made during the same eight-day time period last year, officials said.
