Culver City Police Warn of Scam Involving Police Impersonators

Two individuals claimed to be either an FBI agent or a Culver City police officer and asked a resident to wire money to Mexico.

By City News Service

Culver City police issued a warning today after a resident of the city told them of having been contacted by an individual claiming to be an FBI agent, and then a second person saying he was an investigator for the Culver City Police Department.

The two supposed lawmen said the resident had won "the lottery" but the winnings had been stolen by someone impersonating them, said Lt. Jason Sims of the Culver City Police Department.

The investigator said the Culver City resident should send $1,400 to a location in Mexico, at which point the resident became suspicious and contacted Culver City police, Sims said.

Sims adamantly denied that one of their investigators was involved, but noted that "individuals perpetrating this scam are very, very sophisticated. They are able to manipulate caller ID so that it read 'Culver City Police Department' with a legitimate phone number."
