Culver City police have identified a robbery suspect whom they believe was involved in a carjacking and kidnapping on Thursday afternoon. As of 10 p.m. Thursday, the suspect, Edgar Gomez, was still at large and police say he is armed and dangerous.

LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera said Gomez - a member of the 18th Street gang - was also identified as committing two violent crimes in the Wilshire area, a robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in which he used a knife.

Gomez, 22, is one of  four suspects believed to have taken part in an armed robbery at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday on La Cienega Boulevard and Smiley Drive in Culver City, according to Culver City Police Lt. Ron Iizuka.

Culver City investigators followed a car to La Brea Avenue and Venice Boulevard where two occupants were detained and another ran away, Herrera said.

Culver City detectives were conducting surveillance in the 4700 block of Lomita Street around 1 p.m. Thursday when they spotted Gomez getting into a car.

"Culver City detectives followed the vehicle to Adams Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue where the car stopped,'' Herrera said.

Gomez then ran through a pedestrian tunnel under the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, and two occupants in the vehicle were detained. Detectives lost track of Gomez but California Highway Patrol received a report of that a man traveling westbound on the 10 was trying to get into cars as they slowed in heavy traffic.

"Witnesses reported a man matching Gomez's description enter a vehicle driven by a female,'' Herrera said. "Based on what witnesses saw, it appeared the female driver was forced to drive away from the area."

KTLA reported that the car was a gold Toyota or Hyundai.

Because Gomez is considered armed and dangerous, police are advising anyone who sees him to call 911. Do not attempt to detain him or make contact with him.
