In honor of National CPR Week the Culver City Fire Department will host free "Hands-Only" CPR classes on Tues. June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.

In honor of National CPR Week the Culver City Fire Department will host free “Hands-Only” CPR classes on Tues. June 4  from 10 a.m. to noon.

Participants can choose from two classes: one will take place in front of Fire Station 1  at 9600 Culver Blvd. and the second at the Westfield Culver City Mall located at 6000 Sepulveda Blvd.

According to the Culver City Fire Department,  nearly 300,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests occur annually and only 32 percent of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.

Failure to act in a cardiac emergency can lead to unnecessary deaths.  In fact, less than eight percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive.  On the other hand, effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival.
