The Arts District: History & Architecture in Downtown L.A.

The Los Angeles Conservancy is hosting a tour that celebrates downtown Los Angeles’ historic Arts District. The Arts District Tour: History and Architecture in Downtown Los Angeles will take place on Sunday, November 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The one-day-only architectural tour will explore the area’s unique history and architecture, and will examine the neighborhood’s constant transitions and changes throughout its history. While the Conservancy has given many downtown tours, such as Spanning History: The Bridges of the Los Angeles River (2008), Mainly Main (2007), and Spring on Spring (2005), this is its first-ever Arts District tour. Locations open to the public on the tour will include the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Angel City Brewery, and private lofts in the Challenge Cream and Butter Association Building, Toy Factory Lofts, and Biscuit Company Lofts. For nearly two centuries, the Arts District has been transforming itself—from vineyards to bustling industry; from abandoned factories to a thriving artists’ mecca. Today, the Arts District remains the home of many artists, as well as those in other creative industries such as technology and entertainment. It continues to attract new development and an influx of new residents, yet it retains the authentic feel of its industrial heritage. This heritage is now becoming vulnerable, with one significant site currently threatened with demolition.
