"Fracking" - What's Next? - Westchester-Playa Democratic Club Meeting

The Westchester Democratic Club and West Los Angeles Democratic Club feature
a dynamic panel of experts addressing the unregulated and rapid growth
of the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing “fracking”  used
by the oil industry to extract natural gas that lies beneath farms and
homes from San Francisco to Los Angeles using a mix of toxic chemicals,
sand, and massive amounts of already scarce water.

Lance Simmens
, Adjunct Professor of
Public Policy at Santa Monica
College, and recently
named California State Director of Gasland Grassroots, will address water
quality and health. During the Clinton Administration he was tapped by former
Vice-President Gore to help establish and serve as Deputy Director of the
Federal Government’s first Office of Sustainable Development in the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As one of the first Climate Change
Leaders trained by Al Gore and the Climate Project in 2006 he has delivered
over 100 lectures and presentations on climate change around the world.

Betsy Butler, candidate for the 62nd Assembly District in 2014,   was the first legislator to author
legislation to regulate and place a moratorium on fracking by  ‘Big Oil’.
On May 29 the Senate approved SB 4 by Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills),
which would require public noticing before fracking can take place, permits,
disclosure of chemicals and an independent scientific study of fracking and its
risks to California,
among other provisions. Previous attempts to pass legislation, AB 1301, AB 1323
and AB 649, failed to pass. Betsy will address progress on this issue and what
still needs to be done.
