Own a small business? Here are 3 ways to save money.

As my wife Melissa and I continue to wade through all the trials and tribulations of owning small businesses including our bakery, Essential Chocolate Desserts here in Culver City, we have discovered 10 ways to substantially save money.

1: Review your utilities annually and search for lower cost alternatives.

We used to have 2 phone lines and a separate fax lines a the bakery costing us almost $300 per month.  By switching to digital VoIP phone service through my company Metz Family Technology Services (www.metzfamily.acndirect.com) we are now spending $60 per month. Some small businesses are spending over $100 per month on internet services with speeds that are far beyond what their needs are. Switch to other options that are $50 per month and are wireless (no direct connection using 4G WIMAX) you can disconnect the router and take it home at night eliminating the need for a separate service at home ( not if you have a home security system connected to it though)

2: Always look for alternative vendors for ingredients and be open to picking up the product yourself if time permits. We discovered Costco delivery sometimes saving us 20% and even more if we go to their business center in Hawthorne to pick it up.

3: Work with social networking organizations free or low cost services to market your business. For the bakery we started a Mommy and Me Meetup Group that meets at the bakery so that we can have fun with other new parents and hopefully get new customers. Also, by creating a Facebook business page and creating events is also a good way to promote your business for little $$$
