The Craving: Crepes

The thin breakfast staple is served at all hours of the day in some locations.

I want to break out in song when I think about crepes—the sometimes sweet French pancake with thin layers and many fillings. I found five places in Culver City that took the crepe idea and made a creative, not to mention yummy, treat for even the pickiest of eaters.

1) Meet Restaurant LA

For starters, I'd like to make one thing clear: I have never met a sweet treat that I didn't like. So when I read the menu boasting the title Suzette et Nutella crepe for dessert, I knew that I had to try it. The kicker was that it was flambeed in front of me and glazed with Grand Marnier.

After the burst of flames and the entire showcase, I was happy to bite into the hot crepe, once I asked for whipped cream on the side, that is. Each bite oozed with Nutella,  and the glaze made for an addicting sweetness that took me through the entire dessert in no time flat.

What a way to start my search.

2) Fraiche

A crepe by any other name doesn't matter; I made this decision after asking the waiter whether I had been mistaken when I thought I'd seen a crepe served in the restaurant before. It turns out that I had indeed seen a crepe dessert named The Torta Della Nonna. Relieved then, I was even happier when a big square plate boasted a crepe topped with Fuji apples, pine nut sprinkling, and, to top it off, a smooth and sweet mascarpone ice cream. It was almost too sweet to eat, in a completely irresistible way.

3La Dijonaise

A lunch crepe? I'm intrigued. As it sounds like a sandwich, the Crepes Poulet was an instant choice for me. Stuffed with warm chicken, Swiss cheese and mushrooms, the salty, cheesy and warm mix made me a believer in crepes as a meal. I left full and satisfied.

4) Metro Cafe

Crepes for dessert twice in one day? Believe it, because it was worth it. The generous portion of house dessert crepes come out topped with raspberry and Nutella sauce. Each bite was better than the last because the Nutella and raspberry flavors melted into the warm crepe as I took my time enjoying each forkful. Just like that, I was convinced—crepes can be a very satisfying dessert. It almost feels wrong having them for breakfast now. Almost.

5) Creme De La Crepe

I will pretend that the only reason I wanted to go to the mall in the morning was for yummy crepes. I was instantly torn between two choices, the Fruite Crepe and the Quebec Crepe. The first boasted fresh bananas, strawberries and mango, while the Quebec looked extra sweet with bananas, strawberries and Nutella. I chose the latter—and the sugar-coated crepe was quite possibly the sweetest thing I have ever eaten and called breakfast.

It was that good. The eatery also boasts a variety of lunch crepes, but I was too full to consider them.
