Temperatures to Fall as Winds Kick Up Tuesday

A high wind warning will go into effect Tuesday afternoon.

The Southland again will bask in warm sunshine today, but a cold low-pressure system out of the Gulf of Alaska will send temperatures tumbling precipitously Tuesday, produce snowfall at low elevations and generate furious winds in mountain and desert areas making road travel challenging, forecasters said Monday.

A high wind warning will be in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday in the Antelope Valley and the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, excluding the Santa Monica Recreation area.

National Weather Service forecasters said west-to-north-west winds of between 30 and 45 miles per hour would tear through the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles and Ventura counties Tuesday, gusting at 65 mph. Winds will blow through the Antelope Valley at the same sustained speeds as in the mountains, but gusts should be just a bit tamer, at 60 mph.

"Winds this strong will have the potential to down trees and power lines," according to an NWS advisory.

The wind will make driving difficult Tuesday on Interstate 5, the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway and state Route 138, according to the advisory. In addition to being battered by the wind, motorists in the Antelope Valley may have to also cope with reduced visibility resulting from blowing dust and sand.

NWS forecasters said snow showers may occur across Interstate 5 near The Grapevine by Tuesday afternoon and across the 14 Freeway through Soledad Canyon and portions of the Antelope Valley.

"There is the potential for snow levels to fall as low as 2,500 feet on Tuesday night," according to the NWS advisory. "Due to the very cold air mass expected to settle over the Southland, there will also be the potential for icy roads in the mountains Tuesday night as well as frost in colder wind- protected coastal and valley areas."

Tuesday's weather will mark a return to winter-like temperatures, with highs around 20 degrees lower than today, according to the NWS, which forecast highs of 67 today, 57 Tuesday at LAX, 58 Tuesday in downtown L.A. and 60 Tuesday in Woodland Hills.

Temperatures will be three to five degrees higher Wednesday as a warming trend gets under way in most areas, although it will not start until Thursday in the San Gabriels and the Antelope Valley.
