Small Brush Fire Extinguished in Inglewood Oil Fields

An air tanker was seen from Culver City dropping water over the oil fields.

A small half-acre brushfire in the Inglewood Oil Fields that brought at least one air tanker to the area was quickly extinguished Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Tony Akins said that the small brush fire broke out at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Plains Exploration & Production Company (PXP) property near the 4100 block of South La Cienega.

Akins said that an air tanker was sent to the fire at 10:40 a.m. but was quickly called off at 10:45 a.m. According to Akins, one of PXP’s own water tender trucks was able to knock down the fire.

Culver City residents reported seeing the tanker drop water near the fire. Atkins said that the tanker most likely dropped the water to lighten its load before it turned around and landed again in Van Nuys.

“They probably just did a high drop to empty their tanks,” Akins speculated. “They may just deliver (the water) for the sake of getting the tanks emptied out because when they land, they have to be under a particular weight.”
