Sister City Organization in Touch With Kaizuka, Japan

Culver City's Japanese sister city of Kaizuka escaped the tsunami, according to members of the sister city organization. But plans for ongoing aid are sketchy.

In a short flurry of emails, members of the Sister City Committee informed Patch that while Culver City's Japanese Sister City Kaizuka seems to have escaped the worst of the devastation, plans for the committee to address the devastation have not been made yet.

"I would guess that some of our Sister City Committee members will be giving donations as individuals to various organizations (as I have done), but as far as I know we haven’t yet addressed the issue yet as a group," wrote Alan Schreibman, of the Sister City Committee.

He had earlier emailed that the committee had been in contact with the city.

"Kathleen McCann of our organization received word that all was well in Kaizuka, with no threat of tsunami," Shreibman wrote.  "That was as of 5:30 a.m our time."

According to Barbara Honig, another committee member, it's not really known what, if any, help will be needed at this time.

"We are in regular communication with Kaizuka and will consult with them on how the Culver City community and our sister city committee can be most helpful," Honig wrote in an email to Patch.

Culver City Councilmember Scott Malsin wrote in an email to Patch that watching the devastation in Japan was pretty tough.

"I have heard that our Sister City Kaizuka has not suffered a great deal physically, and for that I am glad. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan; my heart goes out to them in this time of terrible tragedy," Malsin wrote.
