Fox Hills Park: Public Opinions on Public Safety

Current and former Culver City residents give an assessment on crime in this green space.

This week, One Square Mile reporters headed down to Fox Hills Park where four current and former residents shared their thoughts on public safety in their neighborhood. Scroll down to get their opinion and be sure to leave your own.

Katrina Bailey:

A mother of three small girls, Bailey said she and her family frequent the park after going to church off of Buckingham Parkway, mostly finding it to be a safe and quiet place. She said she feels most comforted by the way "everyone seems to watch out for each other in the park environment." With regards to policing, Bailey said she hasn't seen much of a presence, which she largely attributed to the generally safe neighborhood.

Ronny Gloger:

A native of Chile, Gloger and his expectant wife moved to the U.S. approximately three months ago to attend school. After living in Santa Monica for one month, they settled in the Fox Hills neighborhood of Culver City, feeling it to be a safe place—particularly around the park. Gloger said he has no qualms about taking evening strolls through the park with his wife, and as for police presence in the area, Gloger said: "I've seen a few in the area, but not so much that it draws my attention."

Victor Thomlinson:

A self-described "jaded" citizen, Thomlinson willingly voiced his distrust of the police, saying he'd feel safer "just calling the fire department if he were to have a real emergency." As a tattooed "manny" to five children, Thomlinson said he feels safe walking the neighborhood with them only during the day. He also said he feels especially uncomfortable walking with his soon-to-be 13-year-old charge at night, in spite of the fact that he's lived in Fox Hills incident-free for more than two years.

Lima Kamal:

Though recently relocated to Calabasas, Lima Kamal and her family lived in Fox Hills for more than four years, with Fox Hills Park being one of their favorite spots. Though she obviously doesn't frequent the area as much as she used to, Kamal, a mother of two, said she still feels drawn back to Fox Hills especially for family functions. As she never observed any crime while living in the area or on her family's return visits, Kamal said she thinks the police are doing "a good job."

Simeon Grossley:

Sporting waist-length dreadlocks that hung just below the bottom of his plaid shirt, Simeon Grossley strolled through the park while texting on his phone. His assessment of the park and the surrounding neighborhood? "Pretty mellow," he said. Like many of the other residents surveyed, Grossley said the nearby location of a California Highway Patrol office helps keep the area relatively quiet and without much crime.

Next week: One Square Mile reporters will be sitting down with the Culver City Police Department to find out "what matters most" to them. Come back and see whether you agree.
