Four Cheers for Lindberg Park Celebration

The Fourth of July block party and parade brings family fun and community camaraderie to the neighborhood.

What do you get when you serve up hot dogs, snow cones and margaritas? A party fit for a block.

But Lindberg Park's annual Fourth of July block party and parade hasn't always been big enough for the whole block. It began 19 years ago when six families got together on the Fourth of July, pulled their kids around the neighborhood in wagons and ate popsicles at the park afterward. Now, it's turned into a full-blown holiday extravaganza. "It's grown so much over the years," said Alan Elmont, who is part of one of the original six families.

More than 400 Lindberg Park residents, friends and family of residents came out Sunday for the 10 a.m. neighborhood parade and block party that immediately followed.

"It brings our Lindberg Park community together," said Chaille Defaria, who has helped plan the event for 12 years and been on the committee for the last five years.

In the days before there was a committee, Rick Hodges was vital to organizing the celebration for about 14 years.

Hodges came up with the idea for and built the first float, which is re-created each year in a parade tradition. Michael Haase and Gene Bishop took over float duty four years ago and have been creating exciting themes for the float every year. "The kids dig it--they go nuts," Haase said.
