Food Truck Fare Finds Home at Chego

Roy Choi's Korean BBQ is no longer only on wheels.

Many people are familiar with the popular Chef Roy Choi’s Kogi BBQ food truck, which put Korean tacos on the Los Angeles map.

Choi was named best chef of 2010 by Food & Wine magazine for his innovative fusion of Korean and Mexican cuisine that puts a creative spin on rice bowls and simple peasant food. Fans initially had to follow the Kogi truck on Twitter to discover its location. However, since opening his brick and mortar establishment, Chego in Palms in April 2010, fans can now get their kimchi fix whenever they want.

Located in a strip mall at Overland and Rose avenues, Chego (the Korean term for excellent, great or delicious according to Choi), is a small space with communal seating and a long wooden bar for people to stand while eating. After placing your order, you take a number card and find a place to sit (or stand) as you wait for your food to be delivered. You’ll be amused by the unusual array of tchotchkes and knickknacks lined up along the shelves.

The menu at Chego is pretty simple and consists of three categories: the beginning, the middle and the end, with a few dishes offered in each category. Popular starters include ooey gooey fries topped with sour cream sambal (spicy chili sauce), melted jack and cheddar cheeses, cotija (Mexican cheese), chilies, cilantro and pickled garlic; and the 3 p.m. Korean-fried meatballs with green onions, sesame and a polenta patty.

I always order the charred asparagus with roasted garlic and cilantro salsa, chilies, Parmesan and lemon, which has a great combination of flavors. Vegetarian dishes are limited, but a satisfying one is the buttered kimchi chow, a rice bowl topped with a fried egg, red chili tofu, edamame, garlic soy sauce and a sprinkling of furikake (a Japanese rice seasoning).

I just had to try the sriracha (Thai hot sauce) bar for dessert. It's a handmade candy bar consisting of a chocolate-crisped rice bottom, layered with caramel, sriracha ganache (chocolate/cream glaze) and spiced candied peanuts covered in dark chocolate.

Yes, it is as good as it sounds.
