Culver City: A 'Very Walkable' Town

A pedestrian friendliness evaluation by Walk Score gives the area high marks based on proximity to amenities.

It's no surprise to those of us who live and work in Culver City that our neighborhood is quite pedestrian friendly. After all, with the Culver City Bus and a downtown area that has everything you need from stores to art to fine dining, how can you doubt it?

But just how high do we measure compared with other communities within the city of Los Angeles?

According to a study by Walk Score, Culver City received a Walk Score of 79, making it a “very walkable” town, according to the evaluation.

Culver City has a population of 39,501 according to Walk Score, which rivals California cities such as San Gabriel and Campbell in population size. However, our fair city outshined them both, with San Gabriel coming in with a Walk Score of 72 and Campbell with a score of 66. Culver City comes in at No. 5 out of 372 California cities, right under Santa Monica, which snagged a score of 82.

Based on the study, Culver City is similar in walkability to Hermosa Beach at 78.

Overall, Los Angeles ranks 66 out of 2,500 large cities included in the study. West Hollywood ranked No. 1 among the California cities measured.

The evaluation is based on an algorithm that factors the distance of individual addresses to nearby amenities. The study defines neighborhood boundaries according to Zillow.com and weights the score giving consideration to population density based on data from the 2010 U.S. Census.
