Coroner: Breitbart Died of Natural Causes

Andrew Breitbart, the conservative blogger, collapsed in March near his Westwood home.

Conservative blogger and commentator Andrew Breitbart's death was related to heart disease as suspected, the coroner's office confirmed Friday.

No prescription or illicit drugs were found in the system of the 43-year-old Breitbart and foul play is not suspected. Breitbart died March 1 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after collapsing while walking near his Westwood home.

Breitbart played a significant role in the 2011 resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y. Breitbart's biggovernment.com website posted a lewd photo of Weiner in his underwear that had been sent to a Seattle woman. The national nonprofit group ACORN -- the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now -- was also a target of Breitbart. In 2009, he posted an undercover video in which a pair of activists posing as a prostitute and her boyfriend approached ACORN for help with a brothel in which underage Salvadorans would live and work. ACORN workers appeared accommodating, and the organization lost its federal funding in the ensuing uproar.

In 2010, Breitbart posted a short video of Shirley Sherrod, a black U.S. Department of Agriculture employee, in which she appeared to suggest she had made it a point not to help a white man save his family farm in 1986, when she worked for a nonprofit organization in Georgia. In fact, the totality of her remarks made clear she had helped the man. Sherrod was fired after the video posting and declined to return to work even after receiving an apology from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. She later filed a lawsuit against Breitbart.

Breitbart, who was popular with the Tea Party movement, previously spent 10 years as editor of the conservative Drudge Report and helped launch the website The Huffington Post.
