405 Construction Work Downs Eruv This Sabbath

The Observant Jewish community will be affected.

Construction on the 405 means that the L.A. Eruv is down and will not be operating on the Shabbat that begins at sundown Friday, according to the Jewish Journal.

The Journal describes an Eruv as, "A rabbinic work-around to the prohibition of carrying in public spaces on the Sabbath" that "symbolically transforms the area it encloses into a space where carrying is permitted."

Part of the L.A. Eruv boundary is formed by the 405, as the map on the L.A. Eruv website shows (see map above). With construction work on the 405 continuing over the weekend, the Eruv boundary will be disrupted.
