Smashburger Officially Opens in Culver City [VIDEO/PHOTOS]

While the hamburger chain had a soft opening on Dec. 28, the Culver City store held its official ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

Culver City Mayor Andy Weissman and Councilmember Jim Clarke were among those who attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Smashburger at 10704 Venice Blvd. (cnr Overland) on Wednesday afternoon.

The national hamburger chain opened its doors on Dec. 28 at the former home of Famima, but the official ribbon cutting ceremony – complete with red carpet – took place Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Culver City Chamber of Commerce President Steven Rose was on hand with his trusty scissors and ribbon, along with newly installed Chamber Chair Michael Hamill and last year’s Chair Goran Eriksson.

The private event allowed guests to sample some of Smashburger’s fare, and Smashburger Founder Tom Ryan was on hand to explain exactly what goes into the famous Smashburger sauce, and to provide a quick cooking demo.

As Ryan explains, the burgers are in fact “smashed” and are seared and made to order using only fresh (not frozen ingredients). And along with various meat options – from Angus beef, and chicken burgers, there’s also a vegetarian black bean burger, and a slew of different fries options from sweet potato fries, classic smashfries (with rosemary and garlic) and haystack onions. . For those looking for healthier fare, try the veggie frites - flash fried carrots and beans. (see pictures).
